 Description

Like most women, you probably have a life filled with modern-day "idols" that attempt to steal your attention and affection from God. Innocent-seeming idols like chocolate, thighs of iron, and a home that rivals Martha Stewart's. Things you turn to first, before turning to God, when you long for comfort, affirmation, self-worth, or love. You know that God is the answer to all your needs. But then you have a fight with your husband, and that cheesecake in the fridge starts calling your name. You stay home from a women's retreat because your wardrobe is (literally) from the last century. You desperately wish that your house or hair or kids were as nice as your friend's (or anybody else's).

From Publishers Weekly: Idols: Kennedy says that everyone has them, though some people are more coy about their enslavement than others. With wit and style, this book gives those cumbersome idols the comeuppance they deserve. Calling upon her own weaknesses to illustrate how destructively idols can insidiously capture the heart, soul and spirit, Kennedy reveals the darker side of common idols such as useless chatter, image, food, busyness, possessions, achievement, approval, control, perfect relationships, perfectionism, attention, happiness, being right, independence, revenge, self-pity, romance and self-righteousness. Kennedy asserts that the only way to be set free from an idol's grip is to "repent, replace, and rejoice."

Freedom seekers must repent by identifying the idol specifically, unmasking its power and recognizing its danger. They then replace the idol with Christ and concentrate on the truth that he is enough. Finally, they can rejoice by cultivating a deep, satisfying relationship with God and honor God with thanksgiving. As if Kennedy's self-abasing humorous anecdotes weren't satisfying enough, she concludes each chapter with a "Think on These Things" list of reflections, applications and Bible readings. Readers will feast on Kennedy's poignant lessons made palatable by her down-to-earth transparency. Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.

Why we chose this book. . .

“I loved this book! I didn’t think most of it would apply. . . I mean. . . I don’t have idols. . . Or do I? Yes, nearly everything in the book reflected my thoughts at one time or another. It’s a book that will leave you giggling because you don’t feel so alone, but also searching for the answers, because author Nancy Kennedy has found them.” Lisa Copen, Rest Ministries Director
